Long before logos and brandmarks shaped the modern visual world, monograms offered a subtle yet powerful form of identity. Emerging from medieval guilds and flourishing through the Renaissance, these crafted letterforms carried not just initials, but reputation, artistry, and a sense of belonging. Engraved on jewelry, embroidered into garments, or carved into architecture, a well-designed monogram was both personal signature and decorative art.

One of the most elegant visual archives dedicated to this tradition is Das Gewerbe Monogramm, published in 1881 by Austrian artist and publisher Martin Gerlach. The book is a refined collection of monograms, carefully catalogued for artisans, designers, and craftsmen seeking inspiration rooted in historical elegance.

What sets Gerlach’s collection apart is its balance of technical precision and ornamental richness. Each composition shows deep respect for symmetry, rhythm, and creative lettering — offering endless possibilities for reinterpretation, whether for engraving, embroidery, or architectural decoration.

At the time, such publications served as practical tools for goldsmiths, engravers, printers, and textile makers, but today Das Gewerbe Monogramm stands as both a design reference and a piece of visual heritage. The monograms reveal a design language where form and meaning coexist beautifully, far beyond mere function.

In an era where digital shortcuts dominate, Gerlach’s collection remains a reminder of the quiet sophistication embedded in hand-crafted design — and the enduring charm of letters treated as art.

The Mastermind Behind the 1896 One-Dollar Educational Note

As American currency evolved into more than mere tools of commerce, a new artistic era was born — one where banknotes became canvases for intricate visual storytelling. This was the golden age of engraved currency, when the finest artists and engravers worked together to create money that was meant to be admired, studied, and preserved.

Banknote engraving is one of the most demanding and refined artistic crafts. Before digital design or mechanical printing, every line, curve, and shadow on a banknote had to be engraved by hand onto a steel plate. This meant days, sometimes weeks, of intensely focused work, executed under magnification with an eye for microscopic detail. Unlike traditional illustrators, engravers had to think not only in terms of beauty, but of functionality. Their work had to withstand mass reproduction, resist counterfeiting, and remain legible and clear even under heavy wear. Among these craftsmen, in the world of such precision, was Charles Schlecht, who stood as a quiet force of mastery, precision, and timeless elegance. He was not just a skilled hand — he was an artist.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1843, Charles Schlecht immigrated to the United States at a young age. By sixteen, he was apprenticed at the American Bank Note Company, and later worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), where his legacy would truly take shape. For over four decades, Schlecht contributed to the visual identity of U.S. currency, producing master-level engravings that still captivate collectors and historians. What set Schlecht apart was not only his extraordinary technical ability, but his capacity to capture allegory, symbolism, and emotional nuance in cold steel. He had an uncanny ability to translate fine art into engravings with depth, dignity, and poetic subtlety — a rare trait, even among master engravers. His magnum opus is arguably the 1896 $1 Silver Certificate, part of the legendary Educational Series. Here, Schlecht engraved the front-facing design, “History Instructing Youth,” based on an original drawing by Will H. Low. The result is widely considered one of the most beautiful banknotes ever produced in American history.

The front of the 1896 $1 Educational Note is more than a vignette — it’s a neoclassical tableau, alive with movement and meaning. Engraved by Schlecht with painstaking care, the central scene features a robed female figure — History — guiding a young boy along a marble balustrade, offering him knowledge and direction. Behind them, the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol fade into the horizon, tying the allegory to the real geography of the American republic. Schlecht’s engraving gives weight and flow to the drapery, a soft realism to the skin tones, and radiant clarity to the scene. It’s not merely representational — it feels sculptural. The folds of History’s gown seem to breathe, while the gaze of the boy reflects openness and curiosity. There is both tenderness and power in this exchange, rendered through micro-engravings that hold up under magnification. Encircling the scene are wreaths bearing the names of 23 iconic American figures — from inventors and authors to presidents and philosophers — engraved with precision in typography so delicate it borders on sacred calligraphy. These wreaths aren’t decorative; they form a pantheon of American ideals — innovation, leadership, knowledge, independence.

The reverse of the note, engraved by other artists but fully consistent with the aesthetic of the front, features portraits of George and Martha Washington — the only U.S. banknote to include a married couple. Martha’s portrait was based on an 1878 engraving by Charles Burt, while George’s came from Alfred Sealey‘s earlier work. These formal busts are flanked by rich neoclassical frames, with decorative flourishes that mirror the design language of the front. Between them, a bold “1” is engraved — understated, yet commanding — and scrollwork with Latin-style symmetry and foliage elements envelops the entire layout. The design balance of this side reflects America’s rootedness in order, heritage, and domestic virtue.

Schlecht’s contribution to this note was not limited to execution — it was an interpretation. To translate a pencil sketch like Will Low’s into steel with such depth is akin to rewriting a symphony in a new instrument. Schlecht’s sensitivity to shading, line weight, and texture made the allegory not only legible but powerful. More importantly, he infused every curve and contour with the gravitas that banknote engraving demands. His work reflects an understanding that currency is not just a contract, but a cultural artifact — one that speaks to national identity, civic values, and artistic lineage. Though later U.S. currency designs would favor practicality over ornamentation, Schlecht’s work remains a benchmark for engraved excellence. Collectors and scholars continue to study his plates for both technical insight and artistic inspiration.

The art of banknote design stands at the crossroads of aesthetics, security, symbolism, and public trust. These small canvases — often overlooked in daily life — are in fact some of the most widely circulated works of art in history. They shape how we see ourselves as nations, and what we choose to commemorate or forget. In the hands of an engraver like Charles Schlecht, the banknote becomes more than currency — it becomes a message. A narrative in metal and ink. A legacy carried in every wallet, passed hand to hand, moment to moment.

The 19th century was a golden age for illustration, as books and periodicals became increasingly accessible to a growing readership. Advances in printing technology allowed for high-quality engravings to complement literary works, enriching the storytelling experience. Artists played a crucial role in shaping how stories were visualized, turning literature into an immersive journey. Among these artists, Alphonse de Neuville stood out as a master of dramatic and highly detailed illustrations.

Renowned for his dynamic compositions and striking realism, as a visionary illustrator and engraver de Neuville (1835–1885) was a key figure in French book illustration. Initially recognized for his military paintings, he brought the same level of intensity and movement to his engravings. His artwork often featured bold contrasts, rich textures, and a strong sense of atmosphere, making his illustrations compelling and emotionally charged. Whether depicting historical battles or imagined futures, de Neuville had an extraordinary ability to capture tension and drama in every scene.

His talent caught the attention of Pierre-Jules Hetzel, the legendary French publisher who sought to make literature a visual experience. Hetzel was known for producing luxurious, illustrated editions of novels, particularly in his Voyages Extraordinaires collection. Recognizing de Neuville’s ability to bring stories to life, he enlisted the artist to contribute to some of his most celebrated editions. Under Hetzel’s direction, de Neuville worked alongside other great illustrators, creating some of the most iconic images in literary history.

De Neuville’s most famous illustrations were for the novels of Jules Verne. His engravings for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island played a crucial role in shaping the public’s perception of Verne’s imaginative worlds. With intricate details, dramatic lighting, and a masterful sense of scale, de Neuville’s artwork captured the wonder and excitement of Verne’s narratives. His visual interpretations of submarines, deep-sea creatures, and remote islands became inseparable from Verne’s storytelling, leaving a lasting legacy in both literature and art.

Enjoy!

In the more recent time, dispite a few local drawbacks, romanian arts have manage to flowrish outside our traditional borders and make our name heard and voice listend. FromCristian Mungiu’s movies and Maia Morgenstern’s acting to some less local mainstream media covered artists, like matte painter Alexandru Popescu or The Matrix series and Man of Steel art director, Vlad Bina we have some great stuff emerge.

Today we will introduce you to another romanian artist, that we hope will follow the path of those introduced earlier: Ianis Vasilatos.
Ianis is a production manager at „Teatrul Regina Maria”, from Oradea. But that is his regular day job, and what we’re really interested in is his night work, when he creates great designes for cars and bikes. Ianis came under the international attention a few months ago, when he won a competition for designing a bike inspierd by the 1900’s board track racers.By winning the contest, Ianis got the chance of seeing his idea come to reality. Based on his „Arial” initial design, „Local Motors”, the organising company from USA, created to versions of the bike: a zero emission, electric moto-cycle caled „Electric Cruiser” that can go for 20+ miles with just one recharge, and a gas version named just „Cruiser” that can go for 70 miles per tank of gas and 150/mph.
Here is a discription from the „Local Motors” presentation: Inspired by the board track racers popular in the early 1900’s, the modernization of this bicycle style breathes efficiency into its classic design. The frame and exhaust are constructed of high quality, hand-welded 4130 Chromoly. Genuine handcrafted leather accents and strap reinforcements, including a high-quality Brooks B17 saddle in Honey with Black Rails, accompanied by a classic Quad-coil springer front-end, battery powered 1200 Lumen Cree XML T6 head torch, and hand-laced wheels with vintage, smooth riding side wall tires, add an elevated sense of class to the both versions of the Cruiser, each available in a luscious color palette of Creme, Black Satin and Honey with Chrome accents. To ensure everyone enjoys a comfortable ride, the Cruiser is available in two sizes, medium and large. Medium is suitable for people shorter than 5’7″ (1m70), and the Large size is suitable for those who are taller than 5’7″ (1m70).
We really hope this project gets crowdfunded, and most of all, we hope that Ianis wil have the chance of seing more of his designs running the streets.
Thank you Ianis Vasilatos, and good luck!

Sadly, the chances to cross paths with it are dazzlingly low, because what we have here is the most expensive motorbike in the world.
(…)
Performance-wise, it delivers a max 125 HP out of the 1,801 cc v-twin engine and sends the horses to the wheels via a 6-speed transmission system. It tips the scales at around 318 kg, with much of the gross weight being traceable to the amount of gold it carries. The external appearance revolves around a Greek mythological theme – the Medusa.”
The design goes “hand-in-hand with the brand’s efforts to align itself with the fashion community”. ”

It is a way that we found appropriate, to prove to our own self’s that we exist. This need to represent moment over space fascinated brilliant minds from the beginning and still does, to the point of absolute perfection necessity. And by the passing of years, the exact representation of time has become more than just an elaborate technological craftsmanship, it has taken the shape of an art representation. If most of us are used in seeing smooth, simple and more or less stylish designs of wristwatches that just show….time, Some others believe that the inside of the watch and it’s mechanism can be as touching and inspiring as the purpose is made for.

BM&F are showing us, by their starting and unique design the soul of the watch, and the passion and work that takes to create an “original horological masterpiece”.

The Geneva based company, founded by Maximilian Busser, assembles horological artisans and artist, in order to creat out of the ordinary masterpieces, and they seem to achieve their goal. Everything, from the shape of the overall piece or the shape of any component, to the materials that they made of is carefully chosen and crafted, in order transform checking what time it is into a pure and exciting experience.

These time showing machines are something more than just old school, classy watches. They are a pure explosion of artistic fantasy and free design, a tribute to time.

If you’re either curious of how things might work, or your fantasy is running to steps ahead of you, trying to create something else out of everything, maybe you should take a look at what STEAMPUNK is about.

Steampunk is a brilliant, modern, neo-Victorian called, art style based on the Victorian mechanical steam engine period, that fascinated some of the worlds grates writers and artist.

The style broke into mainstream attention in the 1980’s and sets it’s creations in recognizable historical periods that are modified into a futuristic way. Most steampunk related designs are common objects redesigned in gadget-like mechanical and futuristic way, but with a very important retro and stylish touch.

Some of the most inspirational roots of the style can be found in the creations of some of the world’s greatest writers, such as Jules Verne or Mark Twain.

Maybe more than other styles, steampunk pierced in all art branches, from writing to sculpture or music, gaining more and more visibility and attention both from artists and art enthusiasts.

Modern steampunk include from Victorian steam period inspired motorcycles to movies like The League Of Extraordinary Man and Wild Wild West or The World Of Warcraft game.

In some places the style gained so much popularity that it even has annual events organized. Some of these events are quite followed by fans and artists, events like The Labyrinth Of Jareth Masquerade Ball or The San Diego Comic-Con International.

Taking a brief look at the momentum this style took in the last period, it is easy to say we should be expecting to see some very interesting things coming from the Steampunk area in the near future.

An 80-piece orchestra with Thomas Roussel, from the band Something à la Mode, conducting cover songs by Bjork and the Verve. In this romantic, almost oneiric atmosphere, Chanel presented a collection full of rich contrasts. Magical, airy, carefree, the label showed tailleurs with new proportions and slowing dresses in chiffon and lace decorated with feathers”. Vogue.it

Starting in 1955 Chamberlain studied and taught sculpture at Black Mountain College, near Ashville, North Carolina, where most of his friends were poets, among them Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Charles Olson. Since 1957 when he started to include scrap metal from cars in his work he is filling the most renowned galleries with art lovers hungry for his abstract art….

From 1959 onward he concentrated on sculpture built entirely of crushed automobile parts welded together.

Acclaimed in the ’60’s, Chamberlains works were exibitetd from the beginning in museums and art galleries such as the Museum of Modern Art in new York, the Sao Paulo Biennal, the Vennice Biennal, Leo Costelli Gallery in New York or The Guggenheim Museum in 1971. By 1987 his works have been represented by The Pace Gallery.

Beginning with1963 and until 1965, he made geometric paintings with sprayed automobile paint.

In 1993 John Chamberlain received the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture from The Showhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowshiop in 1966 and 1977.

In 1975, French racecar driver and auctioneer Herve Poulain, had the idea of inviting an artist to create a canvas on an automobile. This is how the BMW Art Car project was born, a project that Poulain had no idea it will last until this day.

The first car to pe painted was the BMW 3.0 CSL, the author of the art work being Poulain’s artist and friend, Alexander Calder.

Allthough at the beginning the purpose of the project was simply to paint the cars that they raced ( exactly what happened with the first painted car) later the cars becomed art works that would promote BMW.

Many world renowned artist have paintet the cars, from Roy Lichtenstein with his BMW 320i Group 5 to Andy Warhol’s M1 Grop 5 untill the new 2010 M3 GT2 by Jeff Koons.

The M3 GT2 was unveild on june 1st at the Pompidou center, the world’s most prestigious institution for modern and contemporary art, the same place where back in 1977 Lichtenstein unveild his design.

One of the most interesting project is that of 2009 Z4 Roadster by Robin Rhode. The cars tires were painted in colors like red, blue and yellow and driven on a canvas the size of a football field.

Can’t wait to see what stunning new design will the future artist bring!

Evian believes that consistency Is the answer. That’s just the reason why each year, engages the most accomplished designer at the time to redesign the water bottle.Last year was the Paul Smith Collection and before that Baccarat and Jean Paul Gaultier, preceded by Christian Lacroix. This years’ bottle has been decorated by Issey Miyake, with a flower inspired by his Innovative Pleated Clothes. Evian and MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO signed a pure bottle, glowing with both optimism and freshness. It’s good marketing, but it’s also more than that. It’s a good way to stay in touch with the world and let the world stay in touch with you. It’s a fine way to promote the best of the best and to make others believe in the’re chance of being better…Who knowes, maybe one day you could be up there, be the best!
