The Golden Age of Emblem Typography (1930–1970)

Before digital branding, before vector logos and corporate design manuals, there was craft—and nowhere was that more evident than in the typography and emblems of classic automobiles and boats. Between the 1930s and the 1970s, typographic design wasn’t just a detail—it was a statement of prestige, power, and identity, intricately woven into the very soul of the machine it adorned.

From the Deco-drenched insignias of the 1930s to the chrome-laced scripts of the jet age, these emblems told stories. Each letterform was hand-drawn, carefully composed, and engineered to reflect the aesthetic values and cultural aspirations of its era.

Let’s rewind to the 1930s. Brands like Duesenberg and Rolls-Royce set a visual tone of aristocratic elegance. Their emblems were steeped in classic serif typography—elevated, refined, almost regal. These logos were built to convey trust, engineering precision, and exclusivity, often paired with crests, wings, or coats of arms, echoing a world still deeply rooted in European heritage and craftsmanship.

As we entered the post-war period, a different visual language began to take shape. The late ’40s and ’50s brought optimism and a desire for motion. Enter the era of streamlining—a design movement that didn’t just influence industrial form but also typography. Brands like Cadillac, De Soto, and Imperial embraced sleek, elongated letterforms, often italicized or rendered in gleaming script, suggesting speed and modernity.

Typography was no longer static—it moved. You can see it in the sweeping curves of the Thunderbird script, or the stylish confidence of Chevrolet Impala badges. Designers like Harley Earl (GM) and Virgil Exner (Chrysler) didn’t treat typography as an afterthought—it was integrated into the overall form language of the vehicle, as crucial as the tailfin or the grille.

By the 1960s, we witnessed even more expressive, custom lettering—often bold, geometric, and futuristic. Think Barracuda, Oldsmobile, or Mercury Cougar—each featuring type treatments that reflected muscle, grit, and innovation. Fiat, in contrast, maintained a more minimalist, rationalist approach, often aligning with modernist European graphic trends influenced by the Bauhaus and Swiss Design.

One of the most interesting shifts in this period was the blending of American boldness with Italian flair. Coachbuilders like Ghia and Pininfarina often merged their sleek automotive silhouettes with elegant, high-contrast serif logotypes, suggesting a fusion of beauty and engineering that defined many limited-series icons of the ’50s and ’60s.

And it wasn’t just cars. Luxury watercraft brands like Riva, Chris-Craft, Century, Hacker-Craft, Lyman, StanCraft, and J Craft brought their own typographic signatures to mahogany hulls and chrome dashboards. Their logos frequently evoked nautical precision and hand-crafted charm—often using condensed sans-serifs or flowing scripts that felt both timeless and effortlessly cool.

Typography here was part of a larger emotional language. A Riva Aquarama wasn’t just a boat—it was a dream, and its gold leafed logotype was the whisper of that dream across lacquered wood.

Classic Icons – Keeping the Spirit Alive

These emblems, whether cast in chrome, etched in enamel, or painted by hand, weren’t just logos—they were graphic monuments. That spirit is what Classic Icons, a visual storytelling project, is set to capture and celebrate.

Classic Icons dives deep into the typographic DNA of legendary vehicles, exploring not just the letterforms themselves, but the historical, cultural, and emotional contexts behind them. Through highly detailed illustrations, the project honors the artistry of mid-century design—vehicles, planes, boats, motorcycles, and bicycles included—alongside the communities that continue to preserve and restore them.

At its core, this project is about memory through design. It’s a tribute to the anonymous graphic artists and industrial designers whose typographic work lives on in garages, museums, and Sunday drives. It’s about the connection between style and substance, and how a curve in a letter “R” can say as much about a brand as the engine beneath the hood.

For Designers, Collectors, and Lovers of Heritage Design

Are you a collector of vintage machines, a type design enthusiast, or someone who just loves getting lost in old badges, insignias, and visual stories from the past? Classic Icons was made with you in mind.

Long before logos and brandmarks shaped the modern visual world, monograms offered a subtle yet powerful form of identity. Emerging from medieval guilds and flourishing through the Renaissance, these crafted letterforms carried not just initials, but reputation, artistry, and a sense of belonging. Engraved on jewelry, embroidered into garments, or carved into architecture, a well-designed monogram was both personal signature and decorative art.

One of the most elegant visual archives dedicated to this tradition is Das Gewerbe Monogramm, published in 1881 by Austrian artist and publisher Martin Gerlach. The book is a refined collection of monograms, carefully catalogued for artisans, designers, and craftsmen seeking inspiration rooted in historical elegance.

What sets Gerlach’s collection apart is its balance of technical precision and ornamental richness. Each composition shows deep respect for symmetry, rhythm, and creative lettering — offering endless possibilities for reinterpretation, whether for engraving, embroidery, or architectural decoration.

At the time, such publications served as practical tools for goldsmiths, engravers, printers, and textile makers, but today Das Gewerbe Monogramm stands as both a design reference and a piece of visual heritage. The monograms reveal a design language where form and meaning coexist beautifully, far beyond mere function.

In an era where digital shortcuts dominate, Gerlach’s collection remains a reminder of the quiet sophistication embedded in hand-crafted design — and the enduring charm of letters treated as art.

Navigating Society and Success: A Look into Hill’s Manual of Social and Business Forms (1888 Edition)

In an age marked by rapid industrial growth, shifting social norms, and expanding educational access, people were scrambling to catch up with the demands of modern communication. Whether writing a formal business letter, delivering a speech, or simply knowing how to present oneself in polite society, the stakes had grown higher. Success increasingly depended not just on what one knew, but on how one expressed it.

Enter Hill’s Manual of Social and Business Forms, a book that became a kind of Swiss army knife for personal conduct. Published in 1888 by the Hill Standard Book Company in Chicago, this manual wasn’t just about grammar or penmanship—it was a complete guide to living with poise, precision, and purpose.

What made Hill’s Manual so compelling was the problem it set out to solve: Americans were entering a new era without a clear social playbook. For many, especially those rising through the ranks of business or moving from rural to urban life, there was no inherited script for how to behave in meetings, correspond properly, or speak persuasively. Social confidence was not evenly distributed.

The conflict wasn’t just individual—it was national. A country built on opportunity and reinvention now demanded a shared language of civility and professionalism. Without a common standard, misunderstandings flourished, reputations suffered, and chances were lost. People wanted to fit in, and more importantly, to rise—and Hill’s Manual offered a path.

This is where the brilliance of Thomas E. Hill’s approach comes into focus. The manual is equal parts instruction book, style guide, and philosophical primer. Its chapters cover a wide range of topics: from how to write elegant personal letters and craft persuasive speeches for various occasions, notes of invitations to weddings and parties, to the art of penmanship and even the proper format for commercial forms, business documents and etiquette of conversation , traveling, bal, carriage riding and many more. But it doesn’t stop at writing—it also dives into etiquette, posture, dress, and moral character.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the manual is how democratic its tone feels. Hill doesn’t write just for the elite—his audience is anyone with ambition. A farmer’s son in Iowa and a junior clerk in Chicago would find the same empowering advice on how to command a room or sign a contract with dignity. There’s a distinctly American optimism running through its pages: that anyone can learn to speak and write well enough to climb the ladder.

Visually, the book is a feast. The 1888 edition is richly illustrated, full of ornamental lettering and sample documents that reflect not just the function but the form of proper communication. It taught more than rules; it modeled beauty in communication, promoting a culture where elegance and efficiency were not at odds.

Though over a century has passed since its publication, Hill’s Manual of Social and Business Forms remains a fascinating time capsule—and a surprisingly relevant one. In our digital age, where the line between professional and casual communication is blurrier than ever, Hill’s insistence on clarity, respect, and self-awareness feels newly important.

What the manual ultimately offers is not just instruction, but reassurance. It told generations of readers that social grace and business savvy were learnable, not inherited—that they, too, could move with confidence in a complex world. That message, as true now as it was in 1888, is why this book still captures the imagination of historians, collectors, and curious readers today.

The Mastermind Behind the 1896 One-Dollar Educational Note

As American currency evolved into more than mere tools of commerce, a new artistic era was born — one where banknotes became canvases for intricate visual storytelling. This was the golden age of engraved currency, when the finest artists and engravers worked together to create money that was meant to be admired, studied, and preserved.

Banknote engraving is one of the most demanding and refined artistic crafts. Before digital design or mechanical printing, every line, curve, and shadow on a banknote had to be engraved by hand onto a steel plate. This meant days, sometimes weeks, of intensely focused work, executed under magnification with an eye for microscopic detail. Unlike traditional illustrators, engravers had to think not only in terms of beauty, but of functionality. Their work had to withstand mass reproduction, resist counterfeiting, and remain legible and clear even under heavy wear. Among these craftsmen, in the world of such precision, was Charles Schlecht, who stood as a quiet force of mastery, precision, and timeless elegance. He was not just a skilled hand — he was an artist.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany in 1843, Charles Schlecht immigrated to the United States at a young age. By sixteen, he was apprenticed at the American Bank Note Company, and later worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), where his legacy would truly take shape. For over four decades, Schlecht contributed to the visual identity of U.S. currency, producing master-level engravings that still captivate collectors and historians. What set Schlecht apart was not only his extraordinary technical ability, but his capacity to capture allegory, symbolism, and emotional nuance in cold steel. He had an uncanny ability to translate fine art into engravings with depth, dignity, and poetic subtlety — a rare trait, even among master engravers. His magnum opus is arguably the 1896 $1 Silver Certificate, part of the legendary Educational Series. Here, Schlecht engraved the front-facing design, “History Instructing Youth,” based on an original drawing by Will H. Low. The result is widely considered one of the most beautiful banknotes ever produced in American history.

The front of the 1896 $1 Educational Note is more than a vignette — it’s a neoclassical tableau, alive with movement and meaning. Engraved by Schlecht with painstaking care, the central scene features a robed female figure — History — guiding a young boy along a marble balustrade, offering him knowledge and direction. Behind them, the Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol fade into the horizon, tying the allegory to the real geography of the American republic. Schlecht’s engraving gives weight and flow to the drapery, a soft realism to the skin tones, and radiant clarity to the scene. It’s not merely representational — it feels sculptural. The folds of History’s gown seem to breathe, while the gaze of the boy reflects openness and curiosity. There is both tenderness and power in this exchange, rendered through micro-engravings that hold up under magnification. Encircling the scene are wreaths bearing the names of 23 iconic American figures — from inventors and authors to presidents and philosophers — engraved with precision in typography so delicate it borders on sacred calligraphy. These wreaths aren’t decorative; they form a pantheon of American ideals — innovation, leadership, knowledge, independence.

The reverse of the note, engraved by other artists but fully consistent with the aesthetic of the front, features portraits of George and Martha Washington — the only U.S. banknote to include a married couple. Martha’s portrait was based on an 1878 engraving by Charles Burt, while George’s came from Alfred Sealey‘s earlier work. These formal busts are flanked by rich neoclassical frames, with decorative flourishes that mirror the design language of the front. Between them, a bold “1” is engraved — understated, yet commanding — and scrollwork with Latin-style symmetry and foliage elements envelops the entire layout. The design balance of this side reflects America’s rootedness in order, heritage, and domestic virtue.

Schlecht’s contribution to this note was not limited to execution — it was an interpretation. To translate a pencil sketch like Will Low’s into steel with such depth is akin to rewriting a symphony in a new instrument. Schlecht’s sensitivity to shading, line weight, and texture made the allegory not only legible but powerful. More importantly, he infused every curve and contour with the gravitas that banknote engraving demands. His work reflects an understanding that currency is not just a contract, but a cultural artifact — one that speaks to national identity, civic values, and artistic lineage. Though later U.S. currency designs would favor practicality over ornamentation, Schlecht’s work remains a benchmark for engraved excellence. Collectors and scholars continue to study his plates for both technical insight and artistic inspiration.

The art of banknote design stands at the crossroads of aesthetics, security, symbolism, and public trust. These small canvases — often overlooked in daily life — are in fact some of the most widely circulated works of art in history. They shape how we see ourselves as nations, and what we choose to commemorate or forget. In the hands of an engraver like Charles Schlecht, the banknote becomes more than currency — it becomes a message. A narrative in metal and ink. A legacy carried in every wallet, passed hand to hand, moment to moment.

The Golden Age of Intro Typography: A Closer Look at Film Credits from the 1930s–1950s

Before digital effects, kinetic typography, and minimalist title cards, opening credits in classic Hollywood films were a blend of visual artistry and typographic finesse. Between the 1930s and 1950s, the typography used in film intros played a central role in shaping the first impression of a movie. More than just a list of names, these sequences were carefully designed to match the film’s tone, genre, and emotional atmosphere—serving as a stylistic overture to the story that followed.

One of the most iconic influences during this era was Art Deco—a movement defined by geometric symmetry, bold lines, and ornamental elegance. Many film titles of the early 1930s, especially in dramas and musicals, featured serif typefaces with high contrast and stylized flourishes, often rendered in gold or silver tones to suggest glamour and grandeur. This was the golden age of studios like MGM, Paramount, and RKO, where lavish set design extended into the graphic identity of the film itself.

Films like Grand Hotel (1932) and Gone with the Wind (1939) opened with grand, sweeping typography that felt theatrical and monumental. By contrast, the 1940s introduced a grittier, moodier aesthetic, particularly in the rise of film noir. Movies like The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Double Indemnity (1944) used condensed sans-serif typefaces, sometimes slightly slanted or shadowed, giving a sense of tension and suspense. These choices were heavily influenced by Bauhaus and early Modernist design, emphasizing function, form, and impact over decoration.

Many of these titles were hand-lettered, not typeset—meaning that each one was created specifically for that film, often by in-house studio artists or freelance designers working closely with the director. The result was a typographic signature that could never be exactly replicated. In some cases, the type became iconic on its own, such as the swirling script of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) or the bold block letters of Casablanca (1942), set against moody backdrops and subtle animations like dissolves, shadows, or slow camera pans.

Typography was also used interactively, often integrated into the visual composition of the scene. In Hitchcock’s Notorious (1946), the credits fade in over architectural elements, while in Citizen Kane (1941), Orson Welles used overlapping text and deep shadows to reflect the complexity of his protagonist and the film’s fragmented narrative.

Beyond aesthetics, these intros were a product of tight collaboration between title designers, art directors, cinematographers, and composers, ensuring that the text flowed naturally with music and imagery. The rhythm of the type—how long a name stayed on screen, how it entered or exited—was treated with almost musical precision.

What makes this era particularly fascinating is how much personality and craftsmanship was infused into a relatively short moment. Despite technological limitations, designers of the time created intro sequences that were deeply expressive, emotionally aligned with the story, and visually memorable.

Today, many contemporary filmmakers and title designers draw direct inspiration from this period. The typography of Wes Anderson, for example, echoes mid-century design choices with his use of serif fonts and retro palettes. Even in the age of motion graphics, the quiet elegance of those early film credits continues to resonate.

The typography of 1930s–1950s American cinema reminds us that every letter carries mood, meaning, and cinematic weight—and that first impressions, when crafted with care, can become timeless.

Modern Gods of Craftmanship – Doyald Young

This series is a curated journey through the work of exceptional contemporary artists and master craftsmen — a tribute to the artists who defy time, not just through skill, but through intention, visionaries who blend tradition with innovation in fields like lettering, calligraphy, wood carving, painting, graphic design, and glass gilding. From the timeless elegance of Jake Weidmann to the intricate pointillism of Xavier Casalta, this series celebrates the quiet brilliance and obsessive dedication behind today’s most refined handmade art. They carve, draw, engrave and design with reverence for the process and an uncompromising eye for detail. For me, these artists are more than masters — they are a deep and invaluable source of inspiration, helping me learn, shape my voice, and grow on my own evolving path as an artist in the making.

Let’s open this series of tribute stories with DOYALD YOUNG, whose work reminds us that precision and poetry can live in the same curve. As a true master of letterforms, he started his journey in a small Texas town, driven by a passion for words and shapes that would later make him one of the most respected figures in typography and logotype design. As refined as his script fonts and as sharp as the Oxford English Dictionary he loved, Young set a new standard for elegance in lettering.

Throughout his career, he created typefaces like Young Baroque and Home Run, along with iconic logotypes for major brands such as Prudential and General Electric. But beyond his work, he was also a dedicated teacher, sharing his knowledge with generations of designers at Art Center College of Design.

He authored essential books like Logotypes & Letterforms and Dangerous Curves, helping others understand the nuances of letter design. In 2009, he was awarded the prestigious AIGA Medal for his contributions. His passion and meticulous craft are beautifully captured in the documentary Doyald Young, Logotype Designer, a tribute to his lifelong dedication to the art of typography.
Enjoy!

Angels have fascinated artists for centuries, serving as symbols of divine presence, protection, and spiritual mystery. Across cultures and artistic movements, these celestial beings have taken many forms, from ethereal messengers to powerful warriors, inspiring awe and comfort through their imagery.

In early Christian and Byzantine art, angels were depicted as youthful, often androgynous figures, carrying symbols like trumpets, swords, and scrolls. Byzantine mosaics and icons frequently featured golden halos and flowing robes, emphasizing their otherworldly nature. Seraphim, the highest order of angels, were portrayed with multiple wings, surrounding the divine throne in celestial glory. These fiery beings, mentioned in biblical texts, symbolized purity and divine love.

During the Middle Ages, angelic imagery flourished, especially in illuminated manuscripts and church frescoes. They were seen as protectors, guiding souls and mediating between heaven and earth. Gothic cathedrals featured angel sculptures in intricate stained glass windows, reflecting the growing spiritual connection between art and faith.

The Renaissance brought a shift in how angels were portrayed. Artists like Botticelli, Raphael, and Michelangelo emphasized their grace, beauty, and human-like qualities, making them more relatable. Raphael’s cherubs, for instance, became some of the most recognizable angelic figures in Western art. Archangel Michael, often depicted as a powerful warrior, stood as a symbol of divine justice, courage, and protection, frequently shown vanquishing demons in dramatic battle scenes.

Beyond Christianity, angelic figures appear in Islamic and Jewish traditions as well, often portrayed as messengers or guardians. Persian miniature paintings depict angels in delicate, flowing garments, guiding prophets and protecting the faithful. In Jewish mysticism, the concept of angelic hierarchies, including seraphim and cherubim, influenced depictions of celestial beings in various artistic interpretations.

In more recent times, angels have continued to inspire artists, evolving beyond traditional religious contexts. Romantic and Symbolist painters in the 19th century explored angelic themes, using them as representations of innocence, transcendence, and the supernatural. Modern and contemporary artists have reimagined angels in new ways, often reflecting themes of identity, protection, and spirituality in an increasingly complex world.

No matter the era or culture, angels remain a powerful artistic symbol, embodying humanity’s longing for connection with the divine. Their presence in art, whether as serene guardians or fierce warriors, continues to captivate and inspire, reminding us of the enduring power of faith, beauty, and imagination.

The “&” symbol, often called an ampersand, is a character that represents the word “et.” It’s commonly used in writing to combine two words or items, like in “rock & roll” or “fish & chips.” It’s also frequently used in company names, such as “Smith & Co.”

In lettering, typography, and calligraphy, “&” can be an interesting and versatile character to work with. Its shape offers opportunities for creative expression and stylistic variation:

Design and Style: Depending on the style and context, the “&” symbol can be embellished, flourished, or simplified to fit the overall aesthetic of the lettering or design piece. Calligraphers often experiment with different pen angles, strokes, and flourishes to create visually appealing “&” symbols.
Consistency: When designing fonts or creating hand-lettered pieces, maintaining consistency in the design of the “&” symbol is important to ensure visual harmony within the overall text. Consistency helps in maintaining readability and aesthetic coherence.
Integration with Other Characters: The “&” symbol should integrate seamlessly with other characters in terms of size, weight, and style. It should not stand out too much or appear disjointed within the context of the text.
Expressiveness: Calligraphers and lettering artists sometimes use the “&” symbol as an opportunity to add a touch of personality or flair to their work. This can be achieved through variations in line weight, flourishes, or decorative elements.
Historical Variants: Throughout history, “&” has taken various forms and styles. Calligraphers and typographers may draw inspiration from historical scripts and typefaces when designing their own interpretations of it.
Functionality: In addition to its aesthetic qualities, it also serves a functional purpose in typography and design, acting as a concise and visually distinct representation of the word “and.”

Overall, the “&” symbol presents an opportunity for artistic expression and creativity within the realms of lettering, typography, engrossing, and calligraphy, while also fulfilling its practical role in communication.

The “Old English” calligraphy script is also known as “Blackletter” or “Gothic script.” It’s characterized by its ornate and angular letterforms, often associated with medieval manuscripts and early printed books. The script features thick, straight lines, intricate flourishes, and a vertical emphasis. Despite its name, it’s not actually related to Old English language but was widely used in Europe, especially in Germany and England, during the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. Its distinct appearance makes it a popular choice for formal invitations, certificates, and decorative purposes.

SKETCHBOOK.
(Noun. A book of or for sketches).

Whether you’re an aspiring artist, a seasoned professional, or just someone who loves to doodle, a sketchbook is a vital tool in your creative arsenal.
And unlike a canvas or a piece of paper, a sketchbook is never intimidating or overwhelming. It’s your own personal space to play, create, and dream.

Gathering Ideas and Inspiration: During my creative process, i often start with the research phase. The process in itself requires a lot of time and attention i have to invest, so in order to be more efficient for my further projects, i sometimes collect design details and ideas and in my sketchbook, so that next time i need it, i often check my sketchbook, rather than my books and other rich sources of inspiration. Therefore, my sketchbook becomes a synthesis of the materials covered over time, during the research process.

Overall, a sketchbook is a versatile tool that fosters creativity, growth, and self-expression. It’s a personal space where i can explore, experiment, and unleash my imagination to its fullest potential.

For the next #MySketchbookStories series, I’ll take you through the wonderful world of Hand Drawing, Engrossing, Ornamental Lettering and Design inspired by the Victorian and Gilded Age era, and last but not least, the rare fonts and characters that I have found in my endless research sessions, in the superb books of Martin Gerlach, Patrick William Costello, Ben & Ed C. Hunt, Charles Rollinson, John Mauritz Berling, Charles Paxton Zaner and many others.

All the sketches are drawn by me, exclusively by hand, with pen and ink on paper, during my last years of study and research related to the various commissioned works I had to draw.

The 19th century was a golden age for illustration, as books and periodicals became increasingly accessible to a growing readership. Advances in printing technology allowed for high-quality engravings to complement literary works, enriching the storytelling experience. Artists played a crucial role in shaping how stories were visualized, turning literature into an immersive journey. Among these artists, Alphonse de Neuville stood out as a master of dramatic and highly detailed illustrations.

Renowned for his dynamic compositions and striking realism, as a visionary illustrator and engraver de Neuville (1835–1885) was a key figure in French book illustration. Initially recognized for his military paintings, he brought the same level of intensity and movement to his engravings. His artwork often featured bold contrasts, rich textures, and a strong sense of atmosphere, making his illustrations compelling and emotionally charged. Whether depicting historical battles or imagined futures, de Neuville had an extraordinary ability to capture tension and drama in every scene.

His talent caught the attention of Pierre-Jules Hetzel, the legendary French publisher who sought to make literature a visual experience. Hetzel was known for producing luxurious, illustrated editions of novels, particularly in his Voyages Extraordinaires collection. Recognizing de Neuville’s ability to bring stories to life, he enlisted the artist to contribute to some of his most celebrated editions. Under Hetzel’s direction, de Neuville worked alongside other great illustrators, creating some of the most iconic images in literary history.

De Neuville’s most famous illustrations were for the novels of Jules Verne. His engravings for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and The Mysterious Island played a crucial role in shaping the public’s perception of Verne’s imaginative worlds. With intricate details, dramatic lighting, and a masterful sense of scale, de Neuville’s artwork captured the wonder and excitement of Verne’s narratives. His visual interpretations of submarines, deep-sea creatures, and remote islands became inseparable from Verne’s storytelling, leaving a lasting legacy in both literature and art.

Enjoy!

A glimpse of the artist’s SKETCHBOOK.
(Noun. A book of or for sketches).

A sketchbook is like a portable playground for the art of creation. It’s a blank canvas waiting to be filled with thoughts, ideas, and visions, a vital tool in the creative arsenal. It’s the place where both professionalism and young blooming ideas come together to start the magic.

Think of it as a creative diary, where you can jot down fleeting thoughts, capture moments of inspiration, and unleash your artistic expression without judgment. It’s a safe space where mistakes are not only allowed but encouraged because they’re an essential part of the best creation process.

A sketchbook is like a map of unleashed codes of creation: a place for rough sketches, detailed drawings, brainstorming sessions, branding guidelines useful to be followed, strategic directions that will pass the test of time when needed. It’s where you can explore the best techniques, experiment with different styles that fits best, and push the boundaries of the creativity of both the artist and the final beneficiary.

The beauty of a sketchbook lies in its versatility and flexibility. It’s there whenever inspiration strikes for the artist, for the team and for the client. It’s a place where nothing should be intimidating or overwhelming, but a creation tool for the best projects.

In the following, I will present you some reasons why I have sketchbooks, in which I draw almost daily:

1: Practice: A sketchbook provides a space for regular practice and experimentation. It allows me to try out new techniques, explore different styles, and refine my drawing skills in a low-pressure environment.

2: Ideation: Sketchbooks are ideal for jotting down ideas and brainstorming concepts. Whether it’s doodles, thumbnails, or rough sketches, they help me develop and flesh out my creative thoughts.

3: Recording Inspiration: A sketchbook is a handy tool for capturing inspiration whenever it strikes. Whether it’s a scene from nature, an interesting object, or a fleeting moment, artists can quickly sketch it down for later reference.

4: Improvement Tracking: egularly filling up my sketchbook, helps me tracking my progress over time. I can see how my skills evolve, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate my successes.

5: Freedom of Expression: Sketchbooks offer a private space for creative expression without the pressure of creating finished pieces. I can be spontaneous, messy, and uninhibited, allowing my creativity to flow freely.

6: Portability: Sketchbooks are portable and can be carried anywhere, allowing me to sketch on the go. Whether it’s during commutes, while traveling, or simply during downtime, having a sketchbook handy ensures that I can capture ideas whenever inspiration strikes.

7: Creative Outlet: Sometimes, I just want to draw for the sheer joy of it, without any particular goal in mind. A sketchbook provides a space for creative play and relaxation, allowing me to unwind and recharge.

Overall, a sketchbook is a versatile tool that fosters creativity, growth, and self-expression. It’s a personal space where i can explore, experiment, and unleash my imagination to its fullest potential.

He eliminated flourish, reducing letters to their geometric core. The result was something altogether new: a striking typeface with a high contrast between thick vertical strokes and thin horizontal strokes, crisp unbracketed serifs, giving letters a crisp, clean appearance, and a strict vertical stress in rounded characters, enhancing a sense of formality and geometric construction, reflecting Enlightenment ideals of order and rationality. — an embodiment of what would come to be known, much later, as the Didone style. Bodoni’s designs embraced the capabilities of modern printing technology, allowing for finer lines and greater precision.

The term Didone, now a category within the Vox-ATypI classification system, takes its name from Firmin Didot and Giambattista Bodoni, who independently developed similar designs around the same time. This classification represents a break from calligraphic traditions and signals a shift toward industrial elegance: colder, sharper, and intentionally mechanical in effect. It’s a style that, to this day, feels equally at home in the world of high fashion as it does in academic publishing.

Bodoni’s influence quickly spread beyond Italy. His typefaces were adopted by royal presses and elite publishers throughout Europe, admired for their clarity and sense of luxury. Mapmakers, in particular, appreciated the legibility and grace of Bodoni’s type (designed in 1798)— its clean lines helped guide the eye across cartographic detail without distracting from it. And centuries later, we find his letters in the branding of perfumes, books, and magazines that still strive for timeless sophistication.

His Manuale Tipografico, published in 1818 after his death, is not just a specimen book — it’s a typographic manifesto. With over 140 Roman and italic types, decorative borders, and symbols, all engraved with obsessive precision, it remains a benchmark of type design and artistic ambition. The Museo Bodoniano in Parma holds many of his original works, offering a glimpse into the meticulous process behind his masterpieces.

In today’s digital design landscape, Bodoni’s name is more than just a font — it’s shorthand for a certain attitude: classic yet assertive, ornamental yet structured. While some critics may find Didone fonts too stark or aloof, their impact is undeniable. Bodoni gave us more than beautiful letters — he gave us a visual language of elegance and modernity that still speaks powerfully, centuries on.

The late 19th century saw a renewed fascination with historical symbolism and artistic traditions, particularly in Vienna, a cultural hub of the era. Among the most visually striking publications from this period is the two-volume series Allegorien und Embleme, published by Gerlach & Schenk in 1882. Following the success of the first volume, which explored allegories and guild emblems, the second volume expands on these themes with even greater artistic depth and historical insight.

Curated by Austrian art historian Albert Ilg, Allegorien und Embleme, Vol. 2 presents a stunning collection of emblematic imagery, enriched by contributions from prominent artists of the time. This volume further explores Renaissance-inspired motifs, heraldic symbols, and allegorical representations, reflecting the artistic and intellectual trends of the late 19th century. The collaboration with Martin Gerlach, known for his expertise in publishing and photography, ensures that the book’s large-format illustrations (39 cm) capture intricate details with remarkable precision.

What sets this volume apart is its ability to bridge historical tradition with contemporary artistic innovation. It not only serves as an academic reference for historians and scholars but also remains an enduring source of inspiration for designers and artists. Through its carefully curated imagery and scholarly approach, Allegorien und Embleme, Vol. 2 preserves a visual language that continues to resonate today, offering a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of the past while maintaining its relevance in modern design and symbolism.

The late 19th century was a fascinating period for European art and design, marked by a revival of historical styles and a deep interest in symbolism. Among the remarkable publications of that era is Allegorien und Embleme, a beautifully crafted book, authored by Austrian art historian Albert Ilg and published in 1882 by Gerlach & Schenk in Vienna, in two volumes. This volume, the first in the series, explores the world of allegories and emblems through an artistic and scholarly lens. The second delves into emblems, guild signs, and coats of arms. What makes this work particularly striking is its blend of historical references and contemporary artistic interpretations. It features original designs by renowned artists of the time, alongside reproductions of traditional guild emblems and Renaissance-style motifs.

A collaboration with Martin Gerlach, a respected publisher and photographer, adds further depth to the project. The large-format illustrations (39 cm) allow for intricate details, making the book not only an academic reference but also a source of inspiration for artists, designers, and historians. Allegorien und Embleme remains a testament to the artistic richness of the era, preserving a visual language that continues to captivate scholars and creatives alike.

When we think of typography today, the conversation is often about sleek minimalism, sans-serifs, or the digital tools that shape our visual landscape. But if we turn the clock back to the 1600s and 1700s, typography was an entirely different art form — one woven deeply into the worlds of engraving, metalwork, and ornamental design. During this era, type wasn’t just a means of communication; it was an elaborate spectacle, a demonstration of artistic prowess and technical mastery. Letterforms were shaped by the same hands that created intricate jewelry, armor, and ceremonial objects. The ornamental typography of the time reflected the spirit of Baroque Europe — rich, extravagant, and delightfully excessive — where function met fantasy at every curve and contour.

A brilliant example of this artistic convergence is the collection known as Libellus Novus Elementorum Latinorum, a series of engraved alphabet plates born from the collaboration between two Polish artisans: goldsmith Jan Christian Bierpfaff (1600 – ca. 1690) and master engraver Jeremias Falck (1610–1677).

Bierpfaff was not only a skilled craftsman in metal, but a true student of European design trends. During his early years, he apprenticed with the Mackensen family in Cracow, a workshop responsible for introducing the Dutch auricular style to Polish goldsmithing. The auricular style, whose name refers to its “ear-like” organic forms, brought a fluid, almost otherworldly quality to decorative objects — and this influence is unmistakably present in Bierpfaff’s letter designs.

The alphabets in Libellus Novus Elementorum Latinorum feel alive. The letters twist and morph, balancing on the edge between the botanical and the bizarre. At first glance, you see the refined echoes of Baroque symmetry, but soon the grotesque emerges — vines and tendrils snake around serifs, limbs twist into ligatures, and letters seem to breathe and move under your gaze.

This collaboration between Bierpfaff and Falck created more than ornamental typography. It produced an elegant paradox: letterforms that are both legible and surreal, disciplined and wildly imaginative. Their work remains one of the most charming and eccentric relics from an age where lettering was never simply read — it was experienced.

This year, Kim Jones, the artistic director of Dior menswear, commissioned Hajime Sorayama to create the giant, retro-futurist female robot, to be displayed in the center stage at Dior’s Pre-Fall 2019 menswear show, in Tokyo.
It took the form of an “idealised woman”, with details embossed to resemble mechanical joints, nuts and bolts across its body.

As shown in the movie, the figure was carved from a block of styrofoam and then coated in multiple layers of aluminium paint, which took 20 days to apply.

The artist explains in the film that the project marks 40 years since he first started drawing designs for robots.

“I’ve never created a statue this big before,” he says. “I got excited by the idea of doing something new.”

Sorayama based the design on the characters from his 1983 book Sexy Robot. The book is filled with illustrations featuring hyperrealistic “fembots” – a term used to described robots with a human female-like form.
